Go Wild In The Woods Reveal your wild side and develop your woodland survival skills at The Parks Trust’s Woodland Wonders event. Join park rangers, on Sunday 16 November from 12.00-3.00pm, to explore the tree-mendous trees of Shenley Wood, how to survive in the wild, learn more about traditional woodland crafts and join a guided walk to discover more about leaves, trees and woodlands. The Woodland Wonders event will include a variety of traditional crafts, including pole lathing and making walking sticks as well as the more modern craft of chainsaw carving. You’ll be able to make fire through friction, a whistle to call for help in emergencies and create string from the natural resources around you.
Find out what it really takes to become a modern-day lumberjack. The Trust’s rangers will describe how they care for trees and woodlands, demonstrate traditional woodland management methods of coppicing as well as tree climbing and what a wood needs in order to encourage wildflowers and animals. Visitors can enjoy the heat and the delicious smell of woodsmoke created by charcoal burning and younger woodland explorers can get active in the craft area or join a tree trail and become a wildlife detective. Shenley Wood pre-dates the Domesday survey of 1086 and is one of three ancient woodlands in Milton Keynes. With awesome oaks and towering ash trees it provides a great place to explore just a stone’s throw from the city centre. The event costs £2.50/person. Booking is advised. Follow signs into Shenley Wood, there is a car park on Merlewood Drive, off the V2 Tattenhoe Street, Milton Keynes.
